Australian Centre for the Moving Image Website

Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) is responsible for the promotion of the moving image, with a charter to develop collections, exhibitions, events and educational resources within a national and global environment.

ACMI needed a new website that would reinforce its identity as a Victorian cultural institution whilst remaining reflective of the activities and artworks people can experience. A site that was graphically strong, yet quick and simple to navigate. A site to convey the moving image and provide a convenient access point for the general public.

ACMI was clear about what they wanted - a site to:

• present the company's range of activities in an informative, useful and engaging manner;
• Reflect the 'moving image';
• Reinforce and complement all offline branding;
• Cater for the accessibility limitations of the impaired as well as home and rural users;
• Provide fresh and changing content;
• Effectively use the online medium to have people engage with the institution and its exhibits.

The result is a site that demonstrates the strong visual direction of ACMI combined with the creative, technical and strategic talents of Areeba. The site is now an integral part of the ACMI identity.

Site-update processes have been streamlined. This means the site stays fresh, and ACMI staff happily 'self manage' the large and highly integrated site.

The solution simultaneously publishes content to HTML and XML. The XML content is then used for searching, navigation controls and as an import into the interactive Flash elements of the website. Content can be scheduled to appear at predetermined times as well as removed or moved to an archive section when required.

The solution uses RedDot Content Management, XML, Flash, Swish-e, Java and a variety of other tools and technologies to ensure it is fully integrated with ACMI legacy systems and future proofed for the next round of technical innovation.
